We Chinese students, together with our advisor, Yang left for New York City in the afternoon. After a six-hour drive, we arrived at the destination in the evening. Our first stop was Flushing, the second largest China Town in the United States. We had our dinner in a Chinese restaurant and then checked into the hotel.
The next morning we set off for the historical city, Philadelphia. The word, “Philadelphia” consists of two Hellenic words: “Philos” means love and “adelphos” means brother, so Philadelphia is also called “the city of brotherly love”.
First of all, we visited the Independence Hall where George Washington was appointed commander in chief of the Continental Army, the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776 and the U.S. Constitution was drafted in 1787, all making Philadelphia a vital part in early American history. We also saw the Liberty Bell which has been a symbol of liberty for over 200 years.

Departing from Philadelphia, we started on the journey to Washington DC., the capital of the United States. The center of the American federal government is located in the district, as well as many monuments and museums. We saw the White House which is the residence and workplace for the President of the U.S. and the Parliament Building. We also visited several museums, for instance, the National Gallery of Art and the National Museum of National History, which are all for free. Later, we visited the Lincoln Memorial which is in the form of a Greek temple and contains a large seated sculpture of Abraham Lincoln. We went to the Jefferson Memorial which is in memory of Thomas Jefferson, an American Founding Father and the third president of the United States. Afterwards, the tour took us to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Korea Veterans Memorial which honor the soldiers who fought, died or were missing in the War.
